Gemini: a detailed look
The consortium of Northland Power, Siemens, Van Oord and HVC is
bringing intelligent energy to The Netherlands
1 Upon arrival on site, Aeolus will determine the location of each turbine (within 10 cm of the foundation’s GPS coordinates).
Each custom-built MP will be upended to vertical using Aeolus’s 990-tonne main crane assisted by a second smaller crane.
2 As the MP is being lowered to the seabed, its location will be adjusted to within centimetres of the GPS location.
3 Once the MP is in place, an impact hammer will drive it between 30 and 40 m into the seabed while engineers monitor for verticality until the MP’s top reaches 5 m above the lowest astronomical tide.
Each MP is tapered. The bottom diameter varies from 6.6 m to 7 m, while the top narrows to 5.5 m to reduce wave loads and ensure a uniform flange and appendages.
