General facts

  • Once operational, Gemini will be one of the world’s largest offshore wind farms, both in terms of size and production.
  • Gemini is located in the Dutch North Sea, 85 kilometres north of the Dutch coast and is not visible from the shore. This location offers some of the highest and most constant wind speeds on the Dutch part of the North Sea.
  • The construction of the Gemini farm is currently in full flow. The project is expected to be fully operational by 2017.
  • Four companies joined forces to create Gemini: Northland Power (60% project share), Siemens (20%), Van Oord (10%) and HVC (10%).
  • The project is expected to provide over 500 jobs, as well as an additional 75 to 100 operational jobs over the coming years.

Renewable energy

  • With a total of 600 MW capacity, Gemini is expected to produce about 2.6 TWh of renewable electricity, sufficient for approximately 1.5 million people in the Netherlands.
  • Gemini can provide over 785,000 Dutch households with renewable electricity, and will realise a reduction in CO₂ emissions of 1.25 million tons per year.



  • At €2.8 billion, Gemini is the largest ever offshore wind farm financed on a project basis.
  • The project reached financial close in May 2014, after only six months.
  • Gemini is being constructed in accordance with a contract between two parties: Van Oord is responsible for construction, and Siemens for supplying the turbines. Service and maintenance will be provided by Siemens Energy Service for a 15-year period.
  • Further, approximately 70% of the project’s required financing has been provided via €2 billion of (‘non-recourse’) project financing with first-class coverage and as a term loan from twelve international commercial creditors, and three export credit agencies.
